where can I go on the web to learn how to do baseball scorebooks?

Though there are quite a few ways to handle different rules, there are some constants that remain true, no matter your league’s rules.

First off, you’ll need to know how to handle the various positions on the field. Each position has a stadard abbreviation, as well as a numerical equivalent used in the shorthand of scorekeeping. These follow:

Position Abbreviation Numerical
Pitcher P 1
Catcher C 2
First Base 1B 3
Second Base 2B 4
Third Base 3B 5
Shortstop SS 6
Left Field LF 7
Center Field CF 8
Right Field RF 9
Short Field/Extra Outfield SF 10

Now that we have those, let’s move on to scoring the batter.

A single is recorded as a S (or 1B), a double as a D (or 2B), a triple as a T (or 3B), and a home run as a HR. If the result of the at bat scores one or more runs, a notation for RBI (runs batted in) should be made – many score books provide a space for this in each at bat.

A walk is recorded as BB (base on balls). A hit bater is HBP (hit by pitch). A strikeout is simply a K (some leagues distinguish swinging strikeouts, Ks, from looking strikeouts, Kl).

Finally, on a hit, it is customary to note what part of the field the ball was hit to, using the numerical equivalents of the positions. A single to left field, then, would be recorded as S-7. A triple to right would be T-9.

What if the batter puts the ball into play? You then record what fielders were involved, using the numerical equivalents.

A groundout, shortstop to first base: 6-3.
A double play groundout, third base to second base to first base: 5-4-3. It my be helpful to make a DP notation after this one.
A flyout to center field: FO-8.

iScore Baseball Tutorial Part 4

It is very easy to get into the habit of pulling off the ball. This is especially true for power hitters. Have you ever seen a power hitter hit a home run and thereafter, he can’t couch the ball? What happened? The home run took him out of himself. So as he pivots, he is also pivoting his head. Read the rest of it here: Click Here
